There are 23 Indian Institutes of Technology. They share an admission route and a degree-awarding framework, but they are not interchangeable — they differ in age, size, the departments they are genuinely strong in, and how far down the JEE Advanced rank list they admit.
This page lists all 23 with location, founding year, the year each became an IIT, and its rank in the Engineering category of NIRF India Rankings 2025 — the most recent edition published by the Ministry of Education, released on 4 September 2025.

Ranks and scores from the Engineering category, NIRF India Rankings 2025, released 4 September 2025 by the Ministry of Education. Twenty-two IITs hold individual ranks in the top 100; IIT Goa is placed in the 101–150 band, where institutes are listed alphabetically with no individual rank or published score. Rank 9 is held by NIT Tiruchirappalli, which is why the IIT sequence skips from 8 to 10. NIRF 2026 had not been published when this page was last verified.
NIRF scores institutes on five parameter groups, each marked out of 100: teaching, learning and resources; research productivity, impact and IPR; graduation outcomes; outreach and inclusivity; and perception. A sustainable-development-goals category was added in the 2025 edition.
The score is dominated by overall research output and faculty base. A smaller IIT can have a genuinely strong single department that the institute-level rank hides completely.
Publication and funding counts scale with the size of the faculty body. An institute founded in 2016 is not measured on the same base as one founded in 1951.
Part of the score comes from surveyed reputation, which lags actual change in both directions — upward and downward.
The gaps in the table above show why this matters. The score difference between rank 1 and rank 8 is about 16 points; between rank 8 and rank 27 it is roughly 11. Ranks that look far apart can sit on very close scores, and a difference of five or six places near the middle of the list often means less than the numbering suggests.
Almost every student we counsel reaches the same fork: a higher-ranked IIT with a branch they did not want, or a lower-ranked IIT with the branch they did. There is no universal answer, but three things are worth weighing before you fill your JoSAA choice list.
Open the department’s own page on the institute website and look at the number of core faculty, the labs listed, and the M.Tech and PhD specialisations offered.
A department with eight faculty and no doctoral programme in your area will give you a different four years than one with forty and an active research group — whatever the institute’s overall rank says.
Most IITs allow a branch change after the first year, gated on CGPA and on seats being free in the target department. Both thresholds are restrictive and few such changes actually take place.
Several IITs, including IIT Bombay, IIT Hyderabad and IIT Kharagpur, have discontinued branch change altogether. Check the academic regulations of the specific institute.
Proximity to an industry cluster affects internship access and how easily companies visit. Distance from home affects cost and how often you travel.
Neither appears in any ranking, and both are real for four years.

The two branches we are asked about most. What follows describes what each department publicly documents. It deliberately does not rank institutes against each other by branch, because NIRF publishes no branch-level ranking of IITs and no other public dataset supports one.

The placement and salary tables previously on this page have been removed. They cited average and highest packages that could not be traced to a primary source, and several contradicted each other.
Second-hand package figures go wrong in ways that matter: they mix domestic and international offers, count cost-to-company against base salary, and quote a single outlier as though it described a batch. They also tend to omit how many students were placed at all — RTI data reported in 2024 put the share of that year’s IIT graduates still unplaced at around 38 per cent, up from 19 per cent in 2021. An average package means little without that denominator.
Each institute’s annual report and placement office page give branch-wise participation and offer counts for the most recent cycle.
A median package tells you more than an average, and both tell you far more than the highest offer.
Look at the percentage of the registered batch placed. A high average across a small placed fraction is not a strong outcome.
Admission to the B.Tech programmes at all 23 IITs runs through one route.

There is also a Class 12 eligibility requirement — a minimum aggregate or a top-percentile position in your board — specified afresh in each year’s Advanced information brochure. Read the current brochure rather than a summary of an older one.
Seats are reserved for SC, ST, OBC-NCL, EWS and PwD candidates, with a supernumerary quota for female candidates. Attempt limits, eligibility and the qualifying percentile change between years. Confirm the current rules at jeeadv.ac.in and josaa.nic.in before relying on anything written here.
Twenty-three, all governed by the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961. The most recent were established in 2015 and 2016. Four of the 23 — IIT Roorkee, IIT (BHU) Varanasi, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad and, in a narrower sense, IIT Guwahati — existed before they were granted IIT status, which is why their founding year and IIT year differ in the table above.
Not necessarily. The NIRF rank measures the institute as a whole, weighted heavily towards research output and faculty strength. It does not measure the department you will actually study in. If your branch matters to you, compare departments — faculty count, labs, research groups, doctoral programmes — before comparing institute ranks.
NIRF publishes individual ranks and scores for the top 100 institutes in the engineering category. Below that it groups institutes into bands — 101–150, 151–200 and so on — listed alphabetically, with no individual rank or score. IIT Goa is in the 101–150 band in NIRF 2025. A band placement is not the same as being unranked.
At some IITs, subject to a CGPA threshold and to seats being available in the department you want. Few such changes actually happen because the criteria are strict, and several institutes — including IIT Bombay, IIT Hyderabad and IIT Kharagpur — have abolished branch change entirely. Read the academic regulations of the institute you are considering.
From that institute’s own placement office page or annual report. Ask for the median package and the share of the registered batch placed. Figures quoted second-hand tend to be highest-offer numbers, which describe one student rather than a batch.
