Let’s cut the noise and talk facts.
Right now, in December, I know exactly what is going on in your head. The pre-board panic is setting in, practical files are piling up, and your syllabus meter is probably stuck at 70%. The most common thought spiraling in student WhatsApp groups right now is, “Bhai, Jan attempt chodh dete hain, April mein phodenge.” (Let’s skip Jan, we’ll crush it in April).
Stop. Right. There.
If you think like this, you are walking into a trap. As a senior who has been through the grind and made it to IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, let me explain why the January Attempt is your golden ticket and why missing it is a blunder you can’t afford.
The “Marks vs. Percentile” Reality Check
This isn’t just theory; this is data backed by years of trends. In the January attempt, the competition is raw. On average, a score of 180–190 marks can fetch you a 99%ile. In some tougher shifts, I’ve seen 99%ile drop to 150-160 marks.
Now, look at April. Suddenly, everyone has finished their syllabus. Everyone has memorized the formulas. The competition surges. To get that same 99%ile in April, you often need 210–220+ marks. That is a jump of 30 marks!
Why fight a harder battle in April when you can win the war in January with less resistance? Sure, there are exceptions some years, but generally speaking, January is the “low-hanging fruit.” Grab it.
A Checkpoint for Your Mentality
I’m going to be a bit harsh here because I want you to win. If you are prioritizing school pre-boards and practicals over JEE Main right now, you need to check your priorities.
If you are a serious JEE aspirant, boards and practicals are just checkpoints you have to manage—they are not the destination. The student who has the “fearless mentality” for JEE manages everything. If you are scared of pre-boards, how will you handle the pressure of Advanced?
Don’t be the student who treats January as a “Trial Run.”
I have seen many students joke that the actual JEE Main Jan attempt was their first-ever Mock Test. Don’t be that guy. Don’t waste the attempt just to “see how the paper looks.” Focus entirely on Jan and finish the Mains game here and now.
The 70% Syllabus Strategy
“But Bhaiya, my syllabus is not complete!” So what? Let’s do the math. If you have done 70% of the syllabus with 100% accuracy, that is a potential score of 210 marks. Even with a few errors, you land easily above 180+.
The key word is Consolidation. Instead of running after new chapters, lock in what you know.
- Physics: Do the formulas. The questions are coming very specific these days.
- Chemistry: Named reactions (NCERT) and Inorganic trends.
- Maths: Find the repeating patterns in PYQs (Matrices, Vectors/3D, Conics).
Be confident in what you know. Half the competition eliminates themselves because they enter the exam hall feeling “unprepared.” If you walk in with a mindset of “I will maximize what I know,” you are already ahead of them.

The “Dropper” Advantage is a Myth in Jan
Why is the competition softer in Jan?
- Freshers (Class 12): Many have mentally given up and shifted focus to Boards or are already planning a drop year. They are out of the game.
- Droppers: Many started prep late (June/July). They are under immense pressure to finish the syllabus and haven’t reached the revision stage yet.
This creates a vacuum where a smart student with decent prep can skyrocket their rank. By April, the dropper students will be ready, and the freshers will be free from Boards. The crowd gets denser. Beat them now while they are vulnerable.

The VMC Advantage: Stick to the Source
Since you are at Vidyamandir Classes, you have a massive advantage—use it.
- VMC Revision Classes: Go to them. Your teachers have decades of experience; they know how to consolidate a chapter in 2 hours better than any online video.
- Mock Tests: Give them even if you aren’t ready. You need to build the habit of sitting for 3 hours. Plus, seeing PYQs-based questions flash on the screen helps your brain recognize patterns.
- The Goldmine: Your Module’s Solved Examples and Illustrations. If you master these, the revision is almost entirely done.
Final Word
Jan attempt mein phod do! (Crush the Jan attempt!). Secure that 99%ile, and then spend the next few months peacefully preparing for JEE Advanced while the rest of the world scrambles for Mains in April. There are many more specific VMC hacks and personal experiences I want to share, but I’ll save those for the next few blogs. For now, just keep your head down and make this count. All the best.
