In a turn of events no one expected, the National Testing Agency (NTA) has now confirmed that calculators will not be allowed at all during JEE Main 2026, neither in physical form nor on-screen. The announcement was made a day after the agency’s earlier information bulletin created a significant buzz among students by hinting at the usage of an on-screen calculator for the exam.
The first announcement had relieved the students to some extent as a large number of students thought the inclusion of an on-screen calculator would assist during the Computer-Based Test (CBT) in the form of a numerical calculation reduction. The NTA has now however taken back its words, saying that the mention of a calculator was a typographical error in the information bulletin.

In its latest notice released on Sunday night, the agency said, “The reference to an on-screen standard calculator in Appendix-VIII of the JEE (Main) 2026 Information Bulletin was due to a typographic oversight. The feature is part of NTA’s generic test platform but is not applicable to JEE (Main).”
The NTA also reiterated that JEE Main will steadfastly maintain its old practice of not allowing calculators in any shape or form. Thus, the examinees will have to depend on their mathematical expertise and mental calculation techniques, just like in previous years, throughout the exam.
The message has cleared a bit of confusion among the students who are preparing for one of India’s toughest engineering entrance exams. Not only did some candidates express their dissatisfaction but also a large number of them accepted that the consistency in the exam rules is a good way to keep the process fair and to give equal chances to all.
So, with this confirmation, JEE Main 2026 has come back to its classic format—no calculators; only skills and accuracy in problem-solving.
