We keep hearing the same scary headlines: “Global Recession,” “Tech Slowdown,” “Hiring Freeze.” If you are a JEE aspirant grinding through physics problems late at night, you might be wondering—is it all worth it? Will there be jobs when I graduate?
Well, IIT Kanpur just gave the answer, and it was loud and clear.
The Breaking News: Records Shattered
Let’s look at the numbers that are making headlines. IIT Kanpur kicked off its 2025-26 placement season, and they didn’t just start; they exploded out of the gate. On Day 1 alone, students secured 672 job offers.
For everyone saying the market is down, the data says otherwise:
- Day 1 Offers: 672 (a massive 16% surge compared to last year).
- Students Placed: 627 students walked away with a job in hand on the first day itself (that’s a 20% increase).
- PPOs (Pre-Placement Offers): 253 students didn’t even have to sit for interviews; they converted their internships into full-time jobs. This is a 27% jump.
Who is actually hiring? (The Dream Companies)
It wasn’t just “some companies.” The absolute giants of the industry showed up.
- Tech & Electronics: Qualcomm, SAP, and Navi picked up top talent for core and software roles.
- Finance & Trading: High-paying firms like BlackRock, Deutsche Bank, and HSBC were aggressive in hiring for quant and analyst roles.
- Core Engineering: Even for core branches, giants like Airbus made significant offers.
- Consulting: Top-tier firms like PwC and Accenture were major recruiters.
The Global League: International Offers
And it wasn’t limited to India. 9 students secured international offers on Day 1 itself. Imagine graduating and immediately flying out to work in a global financial hub or a tech capital abroad. That is the level of exposure we are talking about. While the official “highest package” is usually confidential for a few days, reports are already buzzing about top domestic offers hitting ₹1.65 crore and international packages potentially crossing ₹2.5 crore from trading firms.
Inside the “Black Suit” Season: The Real Vibe
You might wonder what this success looks like on the ground. I see it here at IIT (ISM) too, and it’s the same across all top IITs. We often call it the “Black Suit” season because the campus transformation is instant.
Suddenly, seniors who are usually chilling in shorts and tees are walking around the library in full formal suits. The vibe becomes electric. You see them multitasking like crazy—handling mid-sem exams and quizzes while simultaneously prepping for non-core roles like SDE, Product Management, Finance and Data Analytics.
It’s stressful, yes. Interviews can go on until 4 AM. You might have 3-4 interviews scheduled simultaneously, but this is exactly where your college family steps in.
The Support System (And The “Grand Job Treat”)
In college, your friend group is your lifeline. You stress together, you cry together when things get tough, but the joy when the whole group gets placed is unimaginable.
That’s when the real celebration starts. Instagram statuses flood in, juniors start congratulating you, and everyone hopes for that one specific thing: the Grand Job Treat (JT).
And honestly, luck plays a huge factor. I’ve heard so many stories of seniors working incredibly hard for one specific role and not getting it, only to casually give an interview for another role and crack it “chill hoke” (effortlessly).
The “Recession” Fear: Why IITians Don’t Panic With all this talk of hiring, you might still ask: “But what about the job crisis?” It’s something my batchmates and I discuss sometimes, but deep down, we know the reality.
No matter how bad the recession is, you are the “creamiest layer” of the country in the top institutions. Even if we make a decent effort, we still grab packages that are better than the vast majority.
IITians have this incredible capability to adapt. Even if you are in a core branch, you can easily prepare yourself for tech or non-tech roles. We are taught to figure things out. And if not a job? We have the talent to crack CAT, GRE for Masters, or even launch a startup. IITians always find a way to flourish; we never step back.
The Best Part? The Freedom. Perhaps the biggest motivation is what happens after you sign that offer. Once placement is done in December, the entire final semester becomes free. No pressure. Just enjoying college life to the fullest before graduation.
So, the next time you feel too tired to study, remember the number 672. That’s not just a statistic; it’s a promise of life, the “JT,” and the pride that awaits you.
