Indian Institute of Technology Varanasi (IIT Varanasi) is a public technical and research university located in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India. It was established in 1919 and was known as the Benaras Engineering College. It was later renamed as the Indian Institute of Technology (Banaras Hindu University) in 1968 and finally as Indian Institute of Technology Varanasi in 2012. IIT Varanasi has a long history, dating back to 1919 when it was established as the Benaras Engineering College. The college was affiliated to the University of Allahabad and offered undergraduate programs in civil,
mechanical, and electrical engineering.
In 1968, the college was renamed as the Indian Institute of Technology (Banaras Hindu University) and became an autonomous institution.
